Explore Mission Trails Day Program

Connecting Children with Nature is the theme of our 2014 Explore Mission Trails Day which will be held on Saturday, May 17. This popular event features free guided nature walks, talks and programs throughout the park, including live animals and special programs for children. The San Diego Natural History Museum and Scholastic Publishing’s Ms. Frizzle™ and The Magic Schoolbus© will present a special program for children in the amphitheater at the Visitor and Interpretive Center. This year’s program will feature coyotes. There were also be free pony rides, a climbing wall, crafts for children, and many Discovery Stations at the East Fortuna Staging Area. The Lake Murray and Santee Kiwanis Clubs will be selling hamburgers, vegeburgers, hotdogs and refreshments at the Mission Trails Visitor Center and East Fortuna staging area respectively. 



Activities begin at 9:00 AM and end at 2:00 PM unless otherwise noted.
Free shuttle service available from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Food service available from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Visitor Center and East Fortuna Staging area.

A - East Fortuna Staging Area Mast Blvd. and SR 52

Parking available in two lots. Additional parking at West Hills High School—shuttle service available. Parking lot attendants will provide directions to parking lots.

    B - Kumeyaay Lake Campground

    Park in campground day use lot, Bushy Hill lot or along Father Junipero Serra Trail. Walks begin at the entry station.

  •   8:00 to 10:00 AM Morning walk - Birds of Kumeyaay Lake

  •   7:00 to 8:30 PM Twilight Walk

  •   7:30 to 10:00 PM Star Party - Weather permitting - Meet in

    day use parking lot.

    C - Visitor Center

    Park in Visitor Center lot, along Father Junipero Serra Trail or in the lot at Jackson Drive and Mission Gorge Road.

  •   A visit from Ms. Frizzle in the amphitheater (10:00 AM and 11:30 AM. Each program is 30 minutes.)
